2020 Press Release

Grinzane Cavour, 8 November 2020 – A special edition, certainly extraordinary for the way it was held because of the Covid-19 and memorable for the result achieved, despite everything, with a collection that broke all records in the twenty-one years of the event.

The one staged on Sunday, November 8th from the Castle of Grinzane Cavour, a UNESCO site and part of an area recognized as a World Heritage Site, was a World Auction of Alba® White Truffle that will be remembered for the obstinacy of the organizers in wanting to confirm an international charity event, the most important for the area of Alba, Langhe Monferrato and Roero, despite the technical and organizational difficulties imposed by anti-contagion regulations.

So, it was an Auction held without the presence of the public in the hall, but through very popular web links that, thanks to the latest digital technologies, have put in contact all the participating parties - from Grinzane Cavour to Hong Kong and Moscow, from Singapore to Dubai -, as well as the authorities and guests who took part in order to give their support to the event and the public connected with their devices to the live streaming.

An extraordinary commitment to tell our country and the world that solidarity never stops and, indeed, must be promoted and strengthened precisely because a common enemy is affecting the whole world today.

Once again this year, nature has given excellent specimens of white truffle to the trifolau (truffle hunters) of the area, allowing the organizers to select excellent sizes which, in combination with prestigious large bottles of Barolo and Barbaresco wines, were auctioned at the XXI edition of the Alba® White Truffle World Auction.

At the Castle of Grinzane Cavour, the first 240-gram lot and the second 270-gram lot were awarded to two entrepreneurs from the area.

The sensational final lot weighing 900 grams was won by an entrepreneur from Hong Kong after a heart-pounding race in the international markets, for the incredible sum of 100,000 euro.

In the lots of the auction were also included three maxi "made in Piedmont" Panettoni, two weighing 10 kg and one weighing 20 kg, signed by Albertengo, historical company from Torre San Giorgio (Cn), which produces a million and a half leavened products every year. Massimo and Livia Albertengo paid homage to the guests of the international offices connected with Grinzane Cavour with a trio of mini panettoni in three variants: apricot, Moscato wine and traditionally glazed.

The total proceeds of the 2020 Alba® White Truffle World Auction amounted to 482,000 euro.

With the twenty-first edition, the event totals the absolute record of its history and brings the total collection to 5,282,000 million euro.

The 2020 Auction offered a concise challenge and exciting emotions, in a crescendo of expectation and excitement, proving once again to be capable of great results for the health and well-being of people. Of course, there was no direct human contact, but the warmth of empathy and solidarity were perceived even beyond the screens connected via live streaming.

The proceeds collected during the XXI Alba White Truffle World Auction will be donated to finance the hospitality of the young specializing doctors coming to Piedmont to support the Covid-19 wards of hospitals in difficulty; to the "Mother's Choice" Institute in Hong Kong, which helps children without families and young mothers in difficulty; in Moscow, the support will go to the Dmitry Rogachev National Medical Research Center of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology, a cutting-edge research center specializing in haematological, oncological and immunological diseases in children and molecular diagnostics; in Singapore, the funds raised will go to the World Food Future - Educate, discern, nourish, which promotes food education and awareness of consumption and aimed at children from 7 to 12 years from disadvantaged families.

Roberto Bodrito, president of Piedmontese Regional Wine Cavour: "A very special edition, which technology has allowed us to carry out in complete safety, live internationally and which has shown how solidarity is stronger even than the virus. The musical accompaniment of the event, the result of the collaboration with Alba Music Festival and the artist100ic direction of maestro Giuseppe Nova, was highly appreciated: on stage, "Le Quattro Stagioni" by Antonio Vivaldi, performed by the Swiss soloist Maristella Patuzzi with a very precious Stradivari violin dating back to 1687.
