Grinzane Cavour, 8 November 2015 –This year as well we had a great edition of the Alba White Truffle Auction. The event, which took place at the Castle of Grinzane Cavour – precious historic and architectural jewel, now Unesco World Heritage – wants to celebrate the most noble product of the earth of Alba, the Langhe and Roero, both witness and promoter of charity events.
The 11 fantastic lots of the precious Tuber Magnatum Pico, together with Barolo and Barbaresco bottles (magnum and double magnum sizes) have been put to auction with a live satellite connection between three different locations: Grinzane, Hong Kong and for the very first time a brand new ship of the American company Royal Caribbean, moving towards the New York harbour.
The proceeds of the Auction totalled 287.500 Euros.
The emphasis of the different bids was enhanced this year by the fact that the Auction had three locations, with active participants ranging from entrepreneurs, chefs, gourmets on both sides of the world, from the Far-East to North America, up to the hills gently covered by rows of vines of the big Langa terroirs.
The final lot, an incredible sample weighing 900gr, was conquered, after a passionate competition with Grinzane, by a Chinese entrepreneur from Hong Kong for the hyperbolic amount of 100.000 euros.

For us the most important market is still represented by the USA but Asian markets are showing an ever increasing interest”.
The company Royal Caribbean, based in Miami (Florida, USA) was successful in getting a 360gr truffle, that will be served during exclusive dinners onboard of its ships, as announced by John Suley, Vice President for Food & Beverage Operations on board of Royal Caribbean.
In Grinzane, a fabulous lot weighing 520gr was conquered by Dong Zhenxiang, one of the most original and innovative Chinese chefs of the restaurant bearing his same name, in Beijing.
This year among the participants there have been many guests from China, who have actively participated with passionate bids.
The amusement, the joyful expectation for the best bid and the entertainment have been guaranteed by true superstars and faithful habitués: Gastronaut, journalist, food and wine expert Davide Paolini, the amusing Enzo Iacchetti, comedian and TV presenter, one of the most well-known participants of the Auction. And the showgirl Elenoire Casalegno, a welcome return after having been absent for a few editions; journalist and imitator Andro Merkù, famous for his very funny imitations during the radio program on Radio 24 “La Zanzara”. This year, during the event, he “welcomed” the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Pope Francis, Beppe Grillo, the inevitable Matteo Renzi and many others to the joy of all the participants.
La Pina and Diego from Radio Deejay entertained the audience and contributed to promoting a truffle lot walking through the audience. The entrepreneur Giovanni Rana was present as well, always a very welcome guest.
In Hong Kong the Auction was presented by Orlando Pecchenino of the “Consorzio di Tutela Barolo e Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Dogliani” and by Mauro Carbone, director of the ATL Alba Bra Langhe Roero and was hosted at the prestigious Michelin three-starred restaurant t “8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo BOMBANA” of Umberto Bombana, a long-time friend of this charity event.
The event saw participation from many authorities, local administrators, politicians, representatives of the public security forces and important Italian entrepreneurs. In particular this year we must highlight the presence of MP Mariano Rabino, the Regional Minister of the Piedmont Region Alberto Valmaggia (Mountains development, Forests and Truffles) and the Commissioner General of the USA Pavillion at Milan EXPO 2015, Mr. Douglas T. Hickey.
The World White Truffle of Alba Auction usually hands over the special award, “Ambassador of the White Truffle of Alba in the world”. This year the prize was given to a myth of the international cuisine, Joan Roca, of the three Michelin-starred restaurant “El Celler de Can Roca” in Girona, Catalonia, Spain. Joan Roca and his brothers Josep and Jordi, have contributed to making their restaurant win top spot at “World's 50 Best Restaurants” in 2015. They had already obtained the same ranking back in 2013.
This year the proceeds of the World White Truffle of Alba Auction, as far as Italy is concerned, will go to the Fondazione Nuovo Ospedale Alba Bra Onlus (for the construction of the new hospital). As for Hong Kong, they will go to Mother’s Choice to support orphans and young mothers in difficulty.
